Hello Again Friend of a Friend Uke Pciking
We've all been there.
Y'all've been playing the ukulele for a while, you know all the basic beginner chords, you know a few strumming patterns, and you lot can reel off a song or two.
Simply you have an inkling there's something missing. Well, yous're right, in that location is.
In a word: it's fingerpicking!
A fingerpicked ukulele sounds divine – with its four strings and comfy, nylon strings, you might even say the uke was built to be fingerpicked! I certainly think and then. Just bank check out Jake Shimabukuro'southward version of Maverick Rhapsody if you need whatever convincing (ringlet to the terminate of this post to lookout information technology).
Simply here'due south the interesting affair:
A lot of people shy away from learning information technology, as information technology looks complicated. Yous know, something only the Pros know how to practise.
However, all that trepidation is misplaced. And I'grand going to show it to you!
In this article, yous're going to find the perfect guide to getting started with fingerpicking. We show y'all the main ukulele fingerpicking patterns 1 past i, and help y'all gradually build up the skill.

The PIMA Fingerpicking System
Earlier we offset, you demand to know about PIMA. The PIMA system is used to prove you which finger on your picking hand should be used for which note.
- P = Thumb / Pulgar (Castilian)
- I = Index finger / Indice (Spanish)
- M = Middle finger / Medio (Spanish)
- A = Ring finger / Anular (Castilian)
Note: If you're wondering why the P initial is used for Thumb (instead of a T), or why the A is used for the band finger, it's because they're abbreviations in Spanish. It'south a expert idea to familiarise yourself with them as they crop upward a lot.
Note: the pinky (pinkie) is rarely used in ukulele playing.
Fingerpicking Styles
One Finger Per Cord
The ukulele has iv strings, and so information technology may at showtime logical to just allocate one string per finger (leaving out the pinky). This way each cord on your uke is played by one finger.
It makes sense, only information technology's non always the all-time.
Pollex and Two Fingers
Many players adopt to only use three fingers for the entirety of their picking (thumb, index, and middle). This way, the thumb plays both the Grand and C strings and tin 'pedal' between the bass strings, with the alphabetize and middle finger on their own strings. The consequence is with patterns where the G and C and played next to each other, information technology'south really hard.
Ultimately information technology's near what feels nigh comfortable to yous. In the following patterns we suggest which fingers to use, but they aren't steadfast rules.
Ukulele Picking Patterns
The patterns below are all using open strings so you can focus on your picking hand and ignore your fretting manus. This is of import. You don't want to be worrying most chord changes or whatsoever of that stuff.
When you're prepare to innovate chords, I recommend starting with i chord or two-chord songs. This will assistance free upward encephalon space to focus on fingerpicking skills, but will make what yous're playing a bit more interesting. When you're fluent with them, at that place are plenty of keen uke songs that you can exam them out on.
Notation: For the examples below, I've chosen the 'thumb and two finger' style, where the thumb is used for the Chiliad and C string (in the case of example five, for the Due east string equally well!). If you find information technology tricky, try the 'one finger per cord' style. Also, where I've suggested using the index finger (I) you tin can too change it for the middle finger.
Picking Pattern i
We're going to outset with the simplest pattern of the lot, plucking each string, 1 past 1.
Retrieve, the goal is to keep a steady pattern as you pluck. Don't skip this pace, brand sure you tin do it in a nice steady way before you lot get on, ideally to a metronome.
Picking Pattern 2
Here'south another actually adept one.
Picking Design 3
And another similar one.
Picking Pattern 4 (6 Notes)
To spice things up, here'southward a half dozen note pattern, starting with the C bass notation rather than the G. Sounds great, doesn't it.
Picking Pattern 5 (eight Notes)
And to push the boat out fifty-fifty further, here'southward an eight-notation sequence. This is a bit of a conditioning for the pollex but it works a treat when you get it smooth.
Top Tips for Improving Technique
It's sometimes helpful to rest your non-picking fingers on the torso of the ukulele (merely below the A cord). Some teachers advise against information technology, but it'south your call. I personally find information technology helps to stabilize my picking hand.
Practise, do, practise. You've heard information technology said a million times, but information technology'southward true. The but fashion to master annihilation in music (especially fingerpicking) is through repetition. Practise the patterns over and over again, with open strings start so yous merely focus on the right manus, then introduce chords and see how they sound over unlike chord changes.
Then the ultimate test: try them while singing! If you lot can manage to hold down a steady rhythm while singing, you've washed very well.
Also, if you haven't already, go a metronome! They are a great way to set your 'inner time'.
Nosotros hope you institute this footling lesson useful.
Good luck!
